Windows 7 is fast approaching its end of life. As of January 14, 2020 that operating system will no longer be supported.

And there are still millions of die-hard Window 7 users.

Now What???

The good news is that Windows 7 will continue to run on any computer that it is installed on.

The bad news is that Microsoft will no longer automatically send you security updates to defend against new threats and attacks, nor will there be updates to keep current with other tech changes that may interact with Windows 7. Without those updates, there is a strong security risk as well as some of the apps may stop “playing nice” or stop playing altogether at some point.

You Have Options

There are different approaches to this problem:

  1. Keep going with Windows 7 like nothing happened. This is definitely NOT a recommended course of action.
  2. Keep going with Windows 7 and buy security updates. Microsoft will offer an extended security update plan to some users — for a price, of course (and the price goes up each year). Top tier Windows E5 users and Microsoft 365 E5 users will continue to get free updates for one year.
  3. Buy a new computer that comes with Windows 10 and then migrate your files and apps, set up the networks, etc.
  4. If the computer is fairly new (two years old or newer), upgrade to Windows 10.
  5. Try to install Windows 10 on an existing computer that is three years old or more and hope it doesn’t have too many bugs or slows. Windows 10 is LARGE and can demand a lot of resources.

Any PC older than three years is running on 10-year-old technology that Windows 7 was designed to work well with it. Technology used in computers, imaging, internet and more has advanced by leaps and bounds since then. Windows 10 was designed to integrate and work well with these advances. What this means is that you may or may not be happy with Windows 10 on an older computer.

I can help you review all the factors and give you an informed honest opinion of what options would be best for you or your business and, if needed, I can help you implement them.
